INDEX: AWARD 2009 The call for nominations is open for the INDEX: Award 2009, one of the biggest design awards in the world, presented every two years in Copenhagen. INDEX: is dedicated to change global mindsets by demonstrating and exploring the concept of 'Design to Improve Life'. INDEX: Award does not categorise design according to traditional labels since these categories do not fully reflect the interdisciplinary approach employed in most interesting modern design. INDEX: asks that the nomination bodies think horizontally, across design categories and industries, when selecting their nominees for the five categories vital to human life: body, home, work, play and community. Under the focus of Design to Improve Life, each nomination is evaluated according to three parameters: Form, Impact and Context. People from all over the world can submit nominations for INDEX: Award 2009, including INDEX: Regional Ambassadors, members of INDEX:, professional design institutions registered by INDEX:, members of the jury and private individuals. Nominated designs can include works by designers, design teams, public and private companies as well as design students and design enthusiasts from all over the world.

DBA INCLUSIVE DESIGN CHALLENGE 2009 - 'Sedentary Lives' The DBA Inclusive Design Challenge is an annual design competition with a difference. The objective is for designers to create a mainstream product, service, environment or communication, which can be enjoyed equally by consumers of all abilities. A collaboration between the DBA and the Royal College of Art Helen Hamlyn Centre and sponsored by Sanctuary Care, the challenge was launched in 2000 as a creative response to the inadequate level of design in the disability aids and equipment sector. Since then, hundreds of designers have worked on numerous projects developing a range of solutions from a plaster that can be applied one-handed to one of last year's winning entries, a Facebook style scrapbook for aiding memory. This year's Challenge, open exclusively to DBA members, is entitled 'Sedentary Lives' - encouraging designers to look at solutions to address our increasingly immobile culture, from couch potato kids who are glued to their computers and office workers who barely leave their desks, through to those who live in supported care schemes at the end of their lives. Frighteningly it is estimated that 60 percent of the UK population could be obese by 2050. Getting people moving is a massive challenge.

Torino is the first World Design Capital On September 30, 2005, ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design) officially named the city of Torino the first World Design Capital in recognition of the crucial role Torino and Piemonte play on an international level. The area is characterized by numerous excellences in the field of design. Today, it is involved in a planning process to renew Torino’s image from an industrial city to a European city, in which development is based on a combination of innovation and creativity, starting with a solid tradition of entrepreneurship and planning. In accepting this challenge, the city of Torino is proud to be a “beta-tester” of the World Design Capital project, which is promoted by the International Design Alliance (IDA) and conducted by ICSID. This unprecedented title is thus welcomed as an important opportunity to design new ways
